Stepping on my toes

The men in striped shirts are the Eggtones. Their party-centric surf sound is perfect for any beach blanket boogie situation or drag race.

  1. And so for Paul McCartney of Liverpool, opportunity knocks.

  2. Ringo is such a nice guy! He and Freddie are being perfectly decent at each other. Meanwhile Paul and John just seethe with jealousy all the time – it’s no wonder these guys never made it big. 😉

  3. Jealousy is a horrible feeling. And Paul now looks full of it.

  4. Gorgeous historically accurate RIckenbacker bass guitar in Paul’s left hand.

    1. Paul played a Vox bass, at least in 1966. Of which that is an accurate representation.

      1. At this point in time Paul was playing his Höfner 500/1

  5. I think back (embarrassed) to my days as a young artist and how it was always so very tribal, we like these people, those people suck. When it should have been “we are all screwed so why not be nice and help one another”. Like we were each other competition in some hyper regional dumb way. BUT as dumb as that all was/is/will be, there is something to be said for pushing yourself to one-up the other guy/gal/marmoset. Even if you cringe at it when you are 48.

I am team Freddie/Ringo now but all about the “f^&$ those guys” John/Paul back in the day and understand.

    1. That’s a lovely insight for a Thursday night. Thanks, Richard.

  6. Hey, listen, it’s one thing for the lads to be jealous of Freddie’s success. That’s not a good look.

But when it looks like someone’s making a play for your girl… Well, that’s a whole other thing entirely. Can’t blame Paul for getting pissed off about that.

  7. That’s an obnoxious thing to say, Ringo. “Things… lying on the floor…playing with them”? More period sexism, but hard to read from 2021.

    1. his toes, of course.

    2. He’s talking about toes!

      1. Feet: a subject to which the band would return years later with “Old Brown Shoe.”

    3. 2021? What timeline are you on?

  8. Yeah, he’s talking about toes, not Jane. And it’s 2020, not 2021.

    1. Nomi is from the future trying to fix the fact that John Allison is not the most famous comic artist since Jack Kirby.

      1. My cover is blown! Curse my careless brainwave-to-internet dictation!

        1. Don’t worry. We won’t say anything.

  9. I can’t say this is surprising behavior coming from someone who, in about a year, will co-write “You Can’t Do That.”

    1. Apparently “You Can’t Do That” was John’s work, although it got the usual L&Mc credit.

  10. Just thinking what a cliffhanger this is for the DH long weekend — Beatles about to take the stage for what could be their big break, but Paul in a snitabout Freddie making time with Jane. Will the show go on or will Paul challenge Freddie for his girl right there and then? Will jealousy and anger win out over fame and fortune? Will this moment make the Beatles or bury them?

Tune in next time to find out!

  11. Went looking for a quote, found another by Walt Whitman

“Oh, to be alive in such an age, when miracles are everywhere, and every inch of common air throbs a tremendous prophecy, of greater marvels yet to be.”

    ― Walt Whitman

Nice name-check on Lucky Jim as well. Will we get to Look Back In Anger as well?

    1. I think Look Back In Anger looms large over this whole presentation, Roger!

      1. Well, the story has already featured several angry young men!

  12. I loved Lucky Jim. And Amis Pere in general. Nice shout-out!
