Gene Markey did become an admiral in the US Navy, and he liked being an admiral so much that (according to various sources) he insisted upon being referred to by that title for the rest of his life, to the extent that he would throw out mail not addressed to "Admiral Markey". Hedy Lamarr, on the other hand, invented the frequency-hopping technology on which wi-fi is based.
